CBS Happenings丨PYP Exhibition and Graduation Ceremony
2019.06.04

Last Friday was a special day at CBS, which marked the very first Grade 5 Exhibition. The Grade 5 Exhibition is an integral part of the PYP IB Programme as it is the culminating experience of the PYP. The PYP Exhibition is a combination of a dynamic display and a performance.

“It offers students the opportunity to: engage in collaborative, in-depth inquiry about a significant, relevant issue and celebrates their transition from the PYP to the MYP” - Jefferson Elementary

The CBS Grade 5 students all worked from the same transdisciplinary theme, Sharing the Planet, and the same central idea: 'Our choices have an influence of the world.' From that central idea the students expressed what they were interested in and where divided into three groups; Animals, Vegetation and Human Rights. The students then created their own lines of inquiry and chose the key concepts that would guide their questions and inquiry.

Each group then focused on asking questions and inquired according to their lines of inquiry and worked towards preparing for the dynamic display. They also worked with the Art teachers to create various art works. At the same time the Drama, Art, Music and Dance teachers started working with each group to help them prepare for the performance. The students included various styles of dance, drama and music in their performances, including poems, raps and shadow theatre. The students and teachers worked hard for weeks to prepare for the exhibition and everyone was excited when the final day arrived.

On Friday morning the 31 May the grade 5 students stood ready at their dynamic displays eagerly awaiting the welcomed guests. From 9am to 10am parents, teachers and students from different departments and from CFS walked around looking at the displays. The grade 5 students explained what they had inquired about and answered many questions that the guests had. The guests also had the chance to take part in interactive activities and received small gifts.

The grade 5 students then disappeared to get ready for the performance while the parents, teachers and students moved to the auditorium to wait for the show to begin. Each group did a wonderful job showing how humans' choices influence the planet through their various drama, dance and singing performances. The audience also had the chance to enjoy videos that showed what the grade 5 students had experienced through the past year.
