Through ATL in IB programmes, students develop skills that have relevance across the curriculum that help them “learn how to learn”. ATL skills can be learned and taught, improved with practice and developed incrementally. They provide a solid foundation for learning independently and with others. ATL skills help students prepare for, and demonstrate learning through, meaningful assessment. They provide a common language that students and teachers can use to reflect on, and articulate on, the process of learning.
IB programmes identify five ATL skill categories, expanded into developmentally appropriate skill clusters.
In order to develop students ATL skills, MYP not only set up ATL classes, but also cultivates students' ATL skills in the classes of other disciplines, achieving a high degree of consistency. The specific operation is as follows:
The ATL classes are taught based on month. According to the specific requirements of the IB programme, an ATL skill is taught every month, and the specific details of this ATL skill are explained and practiced. The focused ATL skill of each month will also be informed to teachers in various disciplines. Teachers in various disciplines carry out targeted practice and consolidation of these ATL skill in their classes to help students learn how to learn.
The ATL skill in April was self-management skills. This month’s training of ATL skill mainly focused on the storage and arrangement of desks, documents, lockers, etc. After studying a series of storage and arrangement methods, the students carefully elaborated their lockers and desks. And this Friday afternoon, the MYP launched a "Storage Talents-Locker Sorting Competition". Students in each grade actively participated in activities, organized their own lockers according to their favors and decorate the lockers, which was amazing.
This competition selected not only two talents from each class, but also the best class, which greatly promoted the enthusiasm of the students and enhanced their sense of collective honor!
